If you or a loved one is living with an advanced illness or disease, you may face a number of daily challenges. Your Guide to Palliative Care

What is palliative care?

Palliative care is a service designed to improve the quality of life for individuals living with advanced diseases. A team of doctors, nurses, and specialists trained specifically in palliative care work with your physician to provide you with optimal health care throughout all stages of serious illnesses.

Who provides it?

prescription medicationTrained palliative nurses handle most of the health care needs, though specialists will also be consulted and brought in as needed based on the disease. If you’re living with cancer, for example, an oncologist will be an integral part of the health care team. Collectively, they make decisions about treatment, educate you and your family, and will develop ways to alleviate pain and side effects of treatment and prescription medication.

Who qualifies for it?

If you’re living with a serious illness or condition such as cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, or any other neurodegenerative condition, palliative care is often advised. It’s not for elderly or disabled patients who simply have difficulty handling day-to-day tasks. If you’re interested, your primary care physician will make an assessment and then order a referral.

How is it different from hospice care?

With hospice care, patients are determined to have less than 6 months to live. Palliative care alone isn’t for patients with terminal illnesses. However, it is included in hospice care, as the goal is to make patients as comfortable as possible until they pass away.
