As winter temperatures continue to plummet, frozen pipes become more of a concern. From cracks in your plumbing to indoor flooding, frozen pipes can cause expensive and extensive property damage. Here are a handful of tips on how to protect your plumbing during freezing weather conditions.

How Can I Protect My Home Against Frozen Pipes?

1. Drain Your Hose

Even with the water switched off, your garden hose contains fluids that can freeze and expand in your plumbing system. Drain the hose and disconnect it during winter. Shut off the flow of water to your outdoor spigots and shield them from the cold with faucet covers.

2. Drip Your Faucets

When temperatures fall below 32plumbing degrees, allow your sink and tub faucets to drip slightly. The drip will create a flow of water through your plumbing system that prevents water from stagnating. This method will generate enough heat to keep your pipes from freezing.

3. Add Insulation

Attics and basements are especially chilly during colder months. When temperatures drop, the plumbing in these areas can become vulnerable. Add foam insulation to your attic and basement to keep your pipes warm and prevent heat loss.

4. Wrap Your Pipes

Wrap your outdoor and indoor pipes for an extra layer of protection against the cold. Use polyethylene pipe wrap to insulate them. You might even want to use heating tape on your exposed pipes. For indoor pipes in cabinets, crack the doors open to allow warm air to circulate.
