From osteoporosis to severe arthritis, there are several conditions that affect the mobility of elderly individuals. Investing in a few home renovations will ensure you or an aging loved one can still perform all routine tasks and maintain an independent lifestyle. Use the upgrades below to make your home as comfortable as possible for aging in place.

3 Home Renovations for Elderly People

1. Open Floor Plans

If there are narrow corridors connecting the kitchen to the dining and living rooms, consider having a contractor knock out walls to create an open floor plan. Removing walls and narrow doorways will make it easier to move around in wheelchairs, which are hard to maneuver in tight areas. It could also be difficult to turn when using walkers and crutches. Taking away the walls will also improve visibility and eliminate sharp corners.

2. Banisters

home renovationFor a multistory home, using worn stair banisters could lead to dangerous accidents. If fasteners and nails are loose, the installation could snap out of place when held, causing loss of balance and falls. If you lack banisters or your existing handrails are flimsy, replace them with sturdier models. The fixtures should extend from the staircase openings all the way to the top of the steps and should be secured with bolts. Add a railing on each side of the stairs for maximum stability. Safety-grip padding may be added to make them slip-resistant.

3. Shower Benches & Bathroom Railings

Bathrooms are particularly dangerous for seniors, as they risk falls on slippery, wet surfaces. To reduce hazards, place grab rails in the shower stall or tub area, near the toilet, and along the room’s perimeter. If standing for extended periods causes discomfort, install a bench in the shower. A retractable hand-held showerhead will enhance ease of use.
