When you own a home, understanding the basics of the plumbing system is essential for keeping major problems at bay. You don’t have to learn how to do the repairs yourself, but it’s immensely helpful to know signs an issue is forming—especially when they’re related to the sewer line. Usually, a sewer line cleaning dramatically improves the situation; but other times, more specific repairs are necessary. If you notice any of the following, be prepared to call a professional plumber.

How to Know It’s Time for Sewer Line Cleaning or Repairs

1. Slow or Clogged Drains

If unsuccessful, have the sewer line cleaned. With multiple clogs, there’s likely an obstruction further down in the system, beyond the immediate piping in the house.

2. Sewage Backing Up

Like the previous issue, when there’s sewage coming back up through numerous drains, a sewer line cleaning often solves the problem. Unclogging that single drain should suffice; otherwise, it’s a clog in the sewer line. There’s nowhere else from the gray water or wastewater to go, only back up. It usually starts with the lowest drain, since it’s closest to the line.

3. Lusher Lawn

If your yard is suddenly greener or more abundant, there’s a chance the sewer line has cracked, causing sewage to spill out and fertilize the ground. As you may have guessed, this goes beyond cleaning; it needs to be repaired. Small cracks can be fixed by relining the pipe. Also, there are trenchless repair techniques that won't require digging up the lawn.

4. Sewer Gas

Another sign there may be a break in the sewer line is a malodorous scent all around your property. It’s similar to the smell of rotten eggs. Aside from the roof vent stacks, there should never be an opening in the sewer system.

5. Cracked or Settling Foundation

When you see cracks in your foundation or drywall, gaps around windows frames, or have doors that no longer shut easily, the foundation is settling. It could have been caused by a cracked or collapsed sewer line. These issues could be attributed to other drainage problems, so have your roof, gutters, and siding checked first; if those are fine, then the sewer is probably to blame. It will likely need to be replaced.
