During the winter months, property owners depend on heating oil to keep their homes and families warm, comfortable, and safe. But cold weather can have a detrimental effect on heating oil and render it unusable, which can lead to dangerous conditions should freezing temperatures arise. To better understand the relationship between cold temperatures and heating oil, as well as how to prevent issues, here’s what you need to know.

Heating Oil & Cold Weather

heating oilParaffin wax is a component of typical heating oils, and when temperatures drop, it gels and hardens. Some can mistake the gelling process with freezing, though, the oil is not technically frozen. When temperatures reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit, the oil will cloud, which is a sign that it’s beginning to gel. Gelled oil will not heat up properly, and it clogs oil lines and filters and damages oil valves.

Alternatives to Heating Fuel

Kerosene is a viable alternative to heating fuel, and it’s not susceptible to gelling. This type of fuel, however, can be expensive, especially in colder climates where the furnace is in constant use throughout the fall and winter. Mixing kerosene and heating oil—a more cost-effective option—will also prevent gelling. However, avoid mixing the two yourself, as you need to use the correct proportions. Instead, contact a heating oil professional for help.

Additives to Avoid Gelling

Kerosene may not be a feasible option for some property owners, but there are chemical additives that can prevent heating fuel from gelling. Additionally, adding these chemicals to oil that is solidifying will soften and re-liquify the fuel so that it flows freely again. Fuel tanks located outside and above ground are particularly sensitive to temperature drops, so make sure to add anti-gelling chemicals to prevent gelling.

By adding chemical additives to your heating oil, you can keep your home safe and warm all winter long. Since 1953, Bradigan's has been providing oil and anti-gelling additives to homeowners throughout Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. They also offer air conditioning and furnace repair and installation services, chimney sweeping, and petroleum hauling.  To schedule service or to learn more, contact them today by calling (724) 548-7654 or visiting their website.
