Snakes may not play or cuddle as much as cats and dogs, but that doesn’t mean they can’t make great pets. These reptiles are fascinating creatures and can make fantastic companions. But like any animal, they require special treatment to ensure they live a happy, healthy life by your side. Here are four tips veterinarians recommend every first-time snake owner should follow.

4 Snake Care Tips for Beginners

1. Choose the Appropriate Species

There are thousands of varieties of snakes in the wild, but only several are eligible pets. The corn snake and royal python are two of the most popular choices for first-timers. The royal python is the larger of the two and is a native of Sub-Saharan Africa. The corn snake is native to the Southeast United States and comes in many colors, although the most common is golden. Both can live 20 years or longer with proper care.

2. Know the Risks

veterinarianIf you’re considering getting a snake, chances are you don’t have ophidiophobia—or an abnormal fear of snakes. The snakes in your local pet shop and those sold legally as pets are safe, as long as you know how to handle them. However, they are still animals, and accidents can happen. Beware of the risk of bites as well as salmonella, a bacteria all reptiles can carry which can make you sick. Wash your hands after handling your snake and make sure anyone who handles the animal does the same.

3. Make Them Feel at Home

Snakes are not accustomed to living indoors, so they won’t fare well if you don’t provide them with a very particular environment. You’ll need to provide the appropriate humidity and temperature to mimic their natural habitat as closely as possible, and an appropriately-sized terrarium. Inside the terrarium should be two thermometers and a hygrometer, as well as a heat lamp. Rocks and artificial plants should be carefully placed to make it more comfortable and give your snake areas for privacy. Veterinarians advise avoiding heat rocks, as these can hurt the snake’s sensitive skin.

4. Provide Proper Nutrition

Most snakes are carnivorous and eat rodents, birds, insects, or lizards. You can buy frozen food and defrost the animals at room temperature, as opposed to heating them in a microwave, before feeding them. Use tweezers, not your fingers, to feed your snakes. Provide them with a bowl of clean water daily as well.
