All forms of transportation in the United States are governed by the Department of Transportation (DOT). Commercial drivers and diesel technicians are required to learn these rules and regulations and follow them to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving large trucks or buses. Below is an introductory guide to help entry-level technicians and drivers understand this government agency and its basic requirements.

What Is the FMCSA?

diesel technicianThe DOT is broken down into several sub-agencies. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is responsible for overseeing commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) operated by drivers, carriers, and diesel technicians to maintain road safety and further research into improving this goal. It issues regulations, which are enforced by local and state governments. Regulation information, interpretations, and updates are published in the Federal Register under the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).

Penalties and fines will be handed out to those who do not follow regulations. The FMCSA performs compliance reviews to ensure those involved with the truck, its maintenance, and cargo are following these standards. An enforcement case could also be opened following a complaint investigation, terminal audits, and roadside or other inspections.

What Are Some Driver Requirements?

Anyone, including diesel technicians, who takes a commercial vehicle onto public roadways is required to follow FMCSA regulations. This starts with taking a DOT physical exam performed by a licensed medical examiner to determine if they are healthy enough to perform the demands of this position. Primarily, diabetes, hearing, seizure, and vision standards must be met unless otherwise exempt.

The driver’s experience will also be scrutinized for any known violations that might indicate a lack of regard for public safety. Additionally, companies and drivers responsible for transporting hazardous materials must apply for a special permit and complete all required Hazardous Materials Regulations programs.
