When your roof begins to fail, your entire home is at risk. Problems such as water damage can occur throughout the home, causing extremely expensive damage and putting the safety of your family at risk. You can protect both your wallet and loved ones by catching problems early on and scheduling a roofing contractor for repairs as soon as possible.

3 Signs It’s Time to Call a Roofing Contractor

1. Interior Water Damage

A leak in your roof will travel down through the attic into your ceilings and walls. After enough moisture builds up, this water damage will show through the drywall. It may discolor the wall, turning it darker or yellowing it. The wall will also become softer to the touch and mold or mildew may start to grow. If left alone, the water damage will only get worse, and moisture may get into the electrical system, shorting it out or becoming an electrocution hazard.

2. Loose Granules

Gravity and rain will push the granules down into your gutter system, where they’ll get stuck and clog up the system. If you find any of these granules in the gutters, it means that you likely need a roof replacement.

3. Visibly Damaged Roofing

Shingles are laid to create a perfect seal along the top of the roof. Any damaged shingles are a weak spot that will result in a leak. Conducting a visual inspection by climbing up onto the roof is a solid way to check for damage. Look first for shingles that are missing. They may also warp — buckling occurs when the middle of the shingle moves upward, while curling occurs when the edges of the shingle curl. Flashing should be placed along weak spots, such as on ridges and around the chimney. If you see any tears in the material or spots where it’s missing, then you should call a roofing contractor.
