Stephens & Smith Foundations and Flatwork Divisions recently completed work on the Home2 Suites extended stay hotel in West Omaha.  The project, which began in December 2017, entailed nearly 30,000 square feet of 20-inch-thick formed walls and 900 cubic yards of concrete. It also required eight concrete pours, with two being post-tensioned slabs.  “The project required multiple mobilizations of equipment and manpower because of the tight site, elevated concrete and post-tensioning,” Project Manager Steve Estep said.

The hotel’s lower level has 8-foot-high walls and columns while the second floor stands at 14 feet high, which required the use of a crane.  “Our team did a great job responding to the task, overcoming the adverse weather, and coordinating with the general contractor and other trades,” Estep said.

Flatwork often began in the early morning hours to avoid the quick-drying sunlight of the summer. Supervisor JD Harpst said the first post-tension pours were done at 2 a.m., requiring a precise depth and work around plumbing and anchor bolts.  “Once you pour the post-tensioned slab, you can’t stop,” he said. “Our team did a great job despite the limited space for concrete pump truck access.”
