A water feature in your yard adds a beautiful, classic touch to the property and can increase its value. Fortunately, installing one is a simple process. From planning and excavation to decorating and stocking, here’s what you need to know to add a pond in your yard.

How to Install a Pond on Your Property

1. Choosing a Location

Your pond should be built on level ground with access to both water and electrical sources. It cannot be placed where there are existing pipes or wires underground, or on a septic drainfield. Partial shade is helpful for discouraging algae and the comfort of fish, but don’t place your pond under large trees, because falling leaves will be difficult to clean out of the water.

2. Excavation

ExcavationIf you plan a pond 10 feet across, you’ll need to move at least 150 cubic feet of earth, and larger ones require even more space. Hiring a professional for site clearing and excavation is the most efficient choice. They can quickly dig out and shape the area for your pond, then dispose of the dirt.

3. Lining & Finishing

You have two choices for lining the pond: flexible plastic sheeting or a hard shell. Keep in mind flexible sheets are more likely to be damaged by sharp stones and branches, while hard shells are limited to specific sizes and shapes. Whichever you choose, first add two to three inches of sand to the hole for the pond, then place the liner. You are now ready to fill your pond and decorate it with plants and stones.
