If your home relies on a well for water, water well maintenance is essential to keep it clean, fresh, and abundant. This is especially important in winter, when freezing temperatures may damage your pump or pipes. Here is what you need to know to ensure you continue to receive quality water throughout the winter months.

How to Perform Water Well Maintenance in Winter

Shut Off the Pump

Water Well MaintenanceThe soil surrounding the well and equipment serves as insulation in the winter. But for those with water well pumps which are all or partly exposed to the elements above ground should practice diligent water well maintenance. Start by shutting off the pump, especially during storms when the temperature drops drastically. Then, practice extra insulation techniques on additional exposed pipes.

Insulate Pipes Above Ground

Wrap your pump and pipes in insulating material such as foam or rubber insulation tape. These materials help keep the cold from penetrating the pipes and will make your system more resilient against cold temperatures. If your pipes freeze, don’t defrost them with warm water or power tools such as a torch. Call a professional water well company, as these professionals have the necessary tools to defrost pipes without compromising your water.

Drain the Pipes

If you need to prevent your pipes from freezing in the coldest weather, first set aside a generous supply of water to use while the well is unavailable. Then turn off your pump and drain as much water from it as you can. Alternatively, if you can move your pump, submerging it in water too deep to freeze will protect it from damage. Next, turn on all the taps in your home to empty water out of the supply pipe. Leave at least one tap open even after the water has stopped flowing. This will keep the pipes from bursting.
