While you always hope you’ll never find yourself stranded on the side of the road, it’s best to be prepared in case it happens. Having the tools you need means you can wait safely and comfortably when the towing company is on the way. Keep the below items in your car at all times, so you’ll have what you need.

Car Emergency Kit Checklist

1. Jumper Cables

Dead batteries happen when you least expect them, and you need to be prepared. Jumper cables allow you to start your car even after your battery has died. If you don’t want to have to count on another driver for a jump, then purchase a portable battery along with your cables, and keep it charged in your trunk.

2. Tire Replacement Kit

3. Road Flares & Reflectors

If you break down on the side of the road at night, you want to be as visible as possible while waiting for the tow truck. Otherwise, you risk having traffic get dangerously close to you and may even have someone hit your car while you wait for the towing company. Keep some road flares or hazard triangles on hand, so you can put them out behind your car and warn oncoming traffic of your presence.

4. Portable Phone Charger

A dead cell phone battery will not help if you need to call for help. Keep a portable phone charger in your glove box or trunk, so you can always power your phone in an emergency. Put the number of a good towing company in your phone, and calling for help will be a breeze.

5. Food & Water

Though your towing service will try to get to you as quickly as possible, it’s good to have some food and water on hand. Energy bars and bottled water will keep you happy and alert while you wait. This is especially important if you find yourself stranded far outside of town and need to wait for help.
