While driving during wet, icy, or snowy weather, you need to remain vigilant while navigating hazardous conditions. Skidding is all too common throughout the winter months, and you should know what to do if you start to lose control over the vehicle. Tire repair professionals suggest that you keep the following tips in mind.

What Should You Do If Your Vehicle Skids?

Stay Calm & Find a Focal Point

Nerves are the last thing you need when your vehicle starts to skid. Though you may panic initially, try to stay as calm as possible. Do not to make any sudden movements or react impulsively. Grip the wheel firmly, and find a focal point in the distance. This will help you retain control over your vehicle and move in a linear direction.

How to Handle Front Wheel Skids

tiresWhen your entire vehicle begins to move in the wrong direction, you’re most likely in a front wheel skid. These usually happen as the result of navigating a curve too quickly. The first thing you should do is take your foot off the accelerator, or depress the clutch if you have a manual transmission. Steer your vehicle back on track. If it does not respond within a few seconds, lightly press the brakes, which will restore power to the front of the vehicle.

How to Handle Rear Wheel Skids

If your vehicle’s back end slides to the left or right, you’re probably in a rear wheel skid, which is also known as fishtailing. When this happens, turn your steering wheel in the same direction as the skid, but do not spin it too sharply, as you may risk making the skid worse. Correcting in this manner will put your front and rear tires back into alignment. Gradually remove your foot from the accelerator, and stay off the brakes.
