Aside from the engine itself, the transmission is probably the most important component of your vehicle. Its job is to transmit power from the motor to the wheels and cause your car to move. When something goes wrong with the transmission, it can often lead to serious problems and costly repairs. However, the sooner you address the issue, the better. To help you catch problems as early as possible, here are some critical signs you need transmission repair.

3 Signs You Have a Bad Transmission

1. Unusual Noises

transmissionWhen it's operating properly, an automatic transmission should shift gears almost silently. However, if you hear grinding or clunking sounds during shifting, it's an indication that something's wrong. It could mean you have a bad clutch, low transmission oil, or something even more serious. Have it checked out immediately.

2. Trouble Shifting

If the vehicle shifts roughly, it means there is something wrong with the system. For instance, "rough" shifting might include a jerk movement as you accelerate from a stop or the car falling out of gear—a loss of propulsion along with a whining engine followed by a sharp jump forward. Again, this could be caused by a bad clutch, problems with the gearing, or low transmission fluid levels.

3. Leaking Fluid

The transmission fluid provides lubrication to allow fast-moving gears to mesh together seamlessly. It prevents friction and helps disperse warmth so the transmission does not overheat. If the fluid levels drop precipitously, you could suffer major damage, including a complete seizure of the gears. If you find transmission fluid leaking beneath your car, have the leak repaired and replace the fluid as soon as possible. New transmission fluid is easy to identify because it’s usually bright pink or red; over time, it will turn look more brown.
