Your child’s teen years are full of change, from puberty to attending new schools. This is also the time to let them establish independence and personal responsibility, but that’s not to say you can’t guide them in their journey. Here are four ways to help your teen prepare for the transition from middle to high school

4 Ways to Prepare Your Teen for High School

1. Practice the Travel Route

Determine how your student will get to and from school. If they previously walked to school or got a ride and are now taking public transit, for instance, the transition can be significant. Practice the travel route a few times before the first day, so they are confident traveling alone.

2. Attend Orientation Events

highschoolMost high schools have orientation events to familiarize parents and students with the new environment. Be sure to attend these, which are typically in the week or two before the first day of school. Tour the facilities, meet some of the staff, and ask questions. If your teen is interested in extracurricular programs, ask about where these take place and see if you can meet the coaches or instructors as well.

3. Establish a Study Schedule

Studying and completing homework is essential at all school levels, but particularly in high school and beyond. Teens have much more autonomy in high school compared to lower grades and will be expected to take control of their learning and success, of which studying is a major part. Help them establish a schedule ahead of time to manage their time wisely and stay on track. This will help them in college as well when there’s even more homework.

4. Identify Resources

Just like you, teachers and other staff members are there to support your teen throughout their high school experience. Encourage your student to reach out to counselors and tutors who can assist with everything from class schedules to homework help. Also, advise them to interact with teachers, including saying hello in the hallways and asking questions when they need clarification.
