Gutters are an integral part of your home’s roofing system. When working properly, they direct water away from the building to prevent it from seeping into the foundation or roof, where it may lead to flooding and damage. Some animals, however, have other uses in mind.

What Animals Like to Make Your Gutters Their Home?

1. Squirrels

Squirrels like to scurry up trees and gutters onto roofs, possibly even seeking them out as a place of shelter out of the sight of predators. Alternatively, they may store food in these channels, causing clogs. With no pathway for rainwater to escape the roof, it will linger there longer, possibly causing leaks and mold growth if the problem is not addressed. However, by blocking the downspout with mesh and using gutter guards, you can reduce the risk of an infestation.

2. Bats

Bats are not as commonplace as squirrels in most places, but these nocturnal critters can also use gutters as a transit system. They don’t make nests like other animals but may hide under the eaves of the roof or in the attic. This can result in deposits of their droppings, called guano, on or in your house, which is a health hazard to humans. Use gutter guards to keep them at bay.

3. Rodents

Rats and mice, like birds, make nests with materials such as twigs and leaves which can be found in dirty gutters. They may discover food sources there as well, such as seeds and bugs, and sip on the rainwater, which will encourage them to thrive and breed. Therefore, make sure to clean your gutters regularly to remove these easy sources of sustenance so near your home.

4. Birds

guttersBirds are another common culprit. The height and protection gutters offer make them a prime spot for nesting and raising their young. As a result, you may hear chirping and wings flapping. You might also see a parent flying to and from the nest, which is likely hidden from view. While waking up to the sound of birds isn't unpleasant, their nests can clog the drain, which may result in water damage and flooding.
