After you get a flat tire, you might assume that you’ll need to purchase a replacement. But this isn’t always the case. In many situations, tire repair could allow you to get safely back on the road without the expense of new tires. Here’s how you can determine if a tire repair will do the trick.

When Tire Repair Will Work

If you want to save your tire, you’ll need to recognize and respond to the problem quickly. Pulling over and switching to your spare tire could make all the difference in keeping a relatively minor issue from requiring a total replacement.

tire repairGenerally speaking, most punctures—such as from driving over a nail or screw—can be repaired if they are located within the tread area and have a diameter less than 1/4 of an inch. Most repairs will use either a patch, a plug, or a combination of the two to seal the hole and prevent air leaks. A combination a patch will cover 99% of tires for a repair that will last the life of the tire.

When Is a Replacement Needed?

Punctures in the tire’s sidewall or shoulder will not hold a repair. Similarly, cuts and gashes can also decimate a tire’s structural integrity by damaging its interior cords. Driving on tires with this type of damage increases the risk of a blowout, even if you attempt repairs. Similarly, extended driving on a tire that is flat or has low air pressure will result in significant sidewall damage. In these situations, replacing the tire is the safest option.
