Bringing a new baby home is an exciting time, and everyone will want to get acquainted, including your pets. At first, it can be overwhelming for them, and you want to know that no accidents will happen. It’s important to lay some ground rules while still ensuring that your pet is comfortable. Below, you’ll find a few key pet care tips to practice to ensure a smooth transition.

3 Steps to Prepare Your Pet for a Baby

1. Bring Children Around

Babies and children can be overwhelming for pets that aren’t familiar with kids. Even though your baby won’t be as active as a toddler at first, invite friends with children over so they can get acquainted. They’ll become more comfortable around the noise and increased activity. You can also take them to a dog park where you can further practice training around children.

2. Tackle Training

Teach essentials like “stay, “ “sit,” and “leave it” so you can keep the dog away from the baby as needed. You’ll also be strengthening your bond with them and showing them plenty of love, which is important when the baby arrives and demands a lot of attention. If you need assistance, reach out to a pet care professional.

3. Prepare Your Home

Some boundaries may be necessary when the baby arrives, so prepare your home in advance. Place gates or partitions to keep the baby and pet separated if needed. Also, introduce your pet to the baby’s room, clothes, and toys so they can sniff around and get familiar with them. Lastly, visit the pet care store and pick up some toys and other items for your pet. They’ll want to retreat to a relaxing, private place now and then, so make them a comfortable space.
