When it comes to proper dental care, what you eat has as much of an impact as brushing and flossing. Some foods and drinks are known to stain teeth, so you may want to avoid them to ensure your smile remains bright and healthy for life. The following are a few foods that counteract even the best dental care routines.

Avoid These 5 Teeth-Staining Foods & Drinks

1. Coffee

The dark pigments in coffee penetrate teeth and cause discoloration over time. Coffee is also acidic, which wears away enamel. If you can’t cut coffee altogether, refrain from sipping it throughout the day, as this only prolongs exposure.

2. Red Wine

Tannins are organic compounds that give red wine its dryness. These tannins cause dark stains to form, especially when coupled with wine’s acidic nature. Drinking red wine in moderation and rinsing with water can help prevent stains from forming.

3. Balsamic Vinegar

4. Blueberries

Blueberries taste great and are good for your health. Their high acid content is not so great for your teeth and their dark color can easily lead to staining. Rinse after eating blueberries to get rid of some of the acids. Also, consider pairing blueberries with cheese, which boosts saliva production and scrubs away surface stains.

5. Beets

Beets can stain hands, clothing, and your teeth. To ensure proper dental care after eating beets, wait at least an hour before brushing. Brushing immediately after consuming acidic food or drink will do more harm than good, as it can accelerate erosion.
