As a dog owner, your focus is on providing the best possible animal care for your furry friend. However, some dogs get so attached to their humans that they suffer separation anxiety when those people are away. Read on to learn more about separation anxiety in dogs.

Understanding Your Dog’s Separation Anxiety

Why Do Some Dogs Experience Separation Anxiety?

Dogs are social animals that aren’t used to living alone. While most dogs can get accustomed to being by themselves, some become extremely distressed. Animal care experts believe separation anxiety is more common in dogs that were adopted from shelters, or that have experienced major changes in living arrangements, family membership, or schedule.

What Are the Signs of Separation Anxiety in Dogs?

Your dog may start pacing or become depressed when they sense you’re about to leave, or seem desperate for attention when you return. Other signs of separation anxiety can include destructive behavior, inappropriate bathroom habits, and barking or howling.

How Can I Help My Dog Overcome Separation Anxiety?

Give your dog “departure” cues without actually leaving. Pick up your keys or put on your jacket and then sit quietly. This teaches your dog that these signs don’t always mean you’re about to go away.

Independence Training

Gently but firmly discourage your dog from following you around, and resist reassuring them every time they demand it. Get them used to the idea of being in a separate room from you; then practice leaving them alone at home for gradually longer periods.

Counterconditioning

Teach your dog to enjoy being alone by giving them a favorite toy or treat that they only get when you’re gone. Make sure they have a comfortable place to sleep where they feel secure. For some dogs, this might be a crate.
