The winter months can often spell an end to vibrant and vivacious plants. However, some houseplants thrive this time of year—especially if they’re watered and pruned regularly. If you’re looking for ways to spruce up the interior of your home, here are a few to consider buying.

A Guide to Winter Houseplants

1. Aloe

Aloe plants are relatively low-maintenance, and they don’t need much light to survive. They have thick leaves that contain a soothing gel that is healing when applied to cuts and scrapes. They thrive best in terra cotta pots due to their porous nature, as they need good drainage. Aloe requires indirect sunlight or artificial light. They can be watered sparingly during the cold months, but make sure the water reaches deep into the soil.

2. Peace Lily

PlantsPeace lilies are easy to care for and beautiful. They prefer filtered water and moist soil. As a tropical plant, they do well in heat and humidity, so place them in a warmer part of your home. Steer clear of direct sunlight but make sure at least low light is available so that they flower. Start fertilizing them late in the winter season and continue to do so every six weeks.

3. Ficus

Ficus trees can take full light so that it can thrive. Also, keep them in an area that is between 60 and 70 degrees and free of cold drafts. Keep the humidity high by regularly misting the leaves, but water them sparingly. Saturated roots may cause issues, so always check to see if the soil is still moist before watering. Fertilize them once every two months during the cold season, and once a month in spring and summer.
