Fresh sod is vital to the health and vibrancy of your lawn. It provides a quicker alternative to bright, lush grass than traditional seeds and is relatively easy to maintain. The trick, however, is to understand exactly how to maintain it so that it continues to perform well and look great for years to come. Here’s what you need to know if you’ve just installed sod on the ground.

How to Maintain a Freshly Sodded Yard

1. Water It Immediately

The key is to remember that sod is a perishable material and thrives on moisture to survive. If left undernourished, heat could easily develop in a section of sod roll and create visible damage. After the sod company places the material down, water it at least 6 inches below the surface until it reaches a soggy state.

2. Maintain Constant Moisture

sodYou’ll need to maintain that excessive level of moisture throughout the next couple of weeks. In addition to staying off the grass to protect its integrity, it’s also imperative to keep the ground and soil consistently moist. You can use a timed irrigation system to aim water onto the sod multiple times a day. A sod installation professional can provide you with the exact guidelines if you aren’t certain.

3. Mow It Properly

It’s best to mow fresh sod about two weeks after it is installed. Before doing so, reduce the frequency of watering at least a day or two in advance so that the ground isn’t too moist. When it’s time to cut the grass, set the mower to slice high so that it doesn’t aggravate to the ground.

4. Add Fresh Fertilizer

You don’t need to water nearly as much as the weeks progress, but you should still provide the ground with deep moisture to provide the roots an opportunity to thrive in the soil. You can try pulling on a blade or two to make sure they feel firm. After about a month, it’s a good idea to add fertilizer to the ground to promote better root establishment.
