Dealing with a key that’s stuck in a door lock can be frustrating. It can happen if there’s a loose part in the locking mechanism or a pointy burr on a brand new key. Even an old key that’s been damaged could be to blame. Whatever the cause, there are a number of methods you can try to fix the problem, either yourself or with professional help.

How to Remove a Jammed Key from a Door Lock

1. Apply Lubricant

Sometimes the job is as simple as applying a spray lubricant to the keyhole to allow movement of a sharp burr or to eliminate grime inside the lock’s cylinder. Look for a product that features a slender nozzle that is easy to direct into tight spaces. Position it directly above the key and aim inside the opening. Then gently work the key up and down to maneuver it out of the lock. Once you remove it, be sure to file away the sharp area on the key to prevent the problem from recurring.

2. Press the Mechanism

Be careful not to use too much force while doing this—simply jiggle it gently to see if it offers any give. Another tactic is to grip the lock from the center while pulling the key away. This may stabilize the lock, and any possible loose parts, just enough for the key to come loose.

3. Contact a Locksmith

It’s usually best not to fiddle too much with a key that’s stuck. If it seems to require too much effort or you’re not confident that the key will loosen easily, it’s best to have a locksmith handle it for you. They have the appropriate tools needed to extract the key without causing damage to the lock and can perform any necessary fixes if there’s an issue that requires immediate attention.
