Nutrition information, even though it can be complex, can be pretty simple too! Most people know what counts towards a healthy diet, right? We know we can’t eat donuts every morning for breakfast and that we should eat more fish, vegetables and less fried foods. So why is so hard to eat healthy and lose weight? What seems to get in our way?

These 3 things below can stall a person’s healthy eating progress. Don’t let them get you!

  1. We forget to make realistic plans in regards to healthy eating. Especially this time of year, we can set ourselves up for failure by having unrealistic expectations about the food we eat or plan to eat.  Keeping things simple for meal time is the only way to begin making changes in your routine.  Don’t complicate your life by selecting recipes and strict meal plans that are time consuming and difficult to prepare.  Learning how to eat healthy foods that taste great is a great goal for the New Year! That can be an amazing Taco Salad Recipe or an Easy Grilled Chicken Topped with a great sauce. 
  2. We expect perfection.  This is so true when it comes to dieting and changing our eating habits. We often forget to be patient and instead beat ourselves up when things don’t go “perfectly” with our food. This can be a change in plans, a last minute invite out to eat, or a late night at work that puts your meal on hold.  With any of these situations, it doesn’t give you an out from eating healthfully, in fact you still can. Make the best choice with a foods away from home, through a drive thru, or have a stocked fridge and pantry to allow for substitutes when the need arises.
  3. We try to please too many.  Finding the right eating pattern for weight loss is not easy.  You may need to eat differently than your family members, coworkers, and friends.  These situations are hard as we begin to look seriously at our diets.  Remember, what works for one may not work for all.  Find foods that are filling for you, satisfy you, and do the best you can to stay in your routine regardless of what works for others.  To commit to healthy eating and to be successful at losing weight you may have to stand your ground while others around you choose differently.
