The term toothache refers to any pain or discomfort in or around the teeth or gums, and they can be caused by a variety of different dental issues, with tooth decay being among the most common. To avoid this condition, here’s what dentists say you should know.

At-Home Remedies

It's no secret that toothache pain can be intense, and it can prevent you from comfortably eating and drinking; even swallowing may be painful when there is overwhelming tooth pain. While seeing a dentist is always recommended, sometimes it might not be feasible to get an appointment right away. In these circumstances, a few at-home remedies might offer some temporary relief.

First, apply an ice pack to the side of the face where pain is present. Hold it there for 15 minutes, remove it for 15 minutes, then place it again for 15 minutes. Repeat this cycle for up to two hours or until the pain starts to subside.

dentistAnother helpful tip is to gargle with warm salt water. Salt kills some of the bacteria around the toothache, and the warmth of the water can be soothing and help decrease any swelling. Aim to rinse with warm salt water several times a day.

Finally, consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever. Aspirin, acetaminophen, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, can help better control pain levels. Follow the manufacturer's directions for dosage.

Seeing a Dentist

You should always see a dentist for any type of toothache. Because there is no one single cause for all toothache pain, there are several dental problems that could be responsible; only a dentist can get to the root of the issue. In addition to tooth decay, toothaches can also be the result of abscesses, loose fillings, or cracked or chipped teeth, just to name a few possibilities.

A dentist will review your symptoms, perform a comprehensive exam, take x-rays if necessary, and diagnose the problem. They will then develop a treatment plan based on the cause of the toothache and review the next steps with you. You can be confident that you will soon be free of discomfort.
