If your smile is damaged, discolored, or crooked, veneers could help restore your smile. Designed to cover the visible portion of your teeth, veneers are a fast, effective way to change the look of your pearly whites. While this dental procedure is popular and widely practiced, there are some misconceptions about it. Below are the three top myths.

3 Common Veneer Myths

1. They’re Exclusively Cosmetic

While it’s true that they’re designed to refresh the exterior appearance of the teeth, they’re far from being exclusively cosmetic. In addition to sealing surface cracks, they can also be used to strengthen the structural integrity of the teeth and prevent future enamel damage.

2. They Require Extensive Surface Preparation

veneersVeneers can require some reshaping to make room for the composite or enamel shell; however, less enamel is removed than most people realize. For regular ones to be placed, dentists only need to remove about one half of a millimeter of dental enamel. However, newer ones are designed to be much thinner, and some don’t require any surface preparation other than a thorough cleaning.

3. They Don’t Look Realistic

Although older versions of veneers looked bulky, modern varieties are completely customized for each patient, creating an incredibly realistic,  attractive appearance. Before they’re fabricated, your dentist will check the color of your smile carefully and talk with you about your cosmetic goals. After they’re placed, they will be carefully trimmed and polished to blend seamlessly with your smile.
