Access-A-Ride (AAR) is a program serving residents of New York City who are unable to ride standard public transportation due to a disability. Through this paratransit program, eligible individuals can request a ride through a verified provider in lieu of using public transit. Who can use AAR services?

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, AAR is to made available to citizens who are unable to use a city’s mass transit system—including the bus and subway systems. Eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis and the extent of services may vary depending on the individual’s abilities. Specific eligibility and AAR restrictions are listed on an individual’s MetroCard.

Access-a-rideAccess-A-Ride providers will go anywhere that public transit can go within the New York City area. Certain areas of Westchester and Nassau Counties are also served.

When is AAR available?

Eligible riders can schedule transit 24 hours a day, seven days a week through any participating car service.

How much does AAR cost?

Although Access-A-Ride is not free, it is designed to be affordable. Specifically, rates are the same as standard public transportation rates.  

How do I become eligible?

If you are interested in becoming eligible for Access-A-Ride, call (877) 337-2017 to speak with a program representative. First, you will need to make an appointment at an assessment center in your local area. Next, an application will be mailed to you that should be filled out prior to your appointment. During your appointment, a representative will review your application and determine eligibility status. If approved, a designated MetroCard will be provided to you.
