The vehicle automatically and nearly seamlessly shifts gears to accommodate the car's speed. 3. Semi-Automatic

Also called automated manual or clutchless manual transmissions, these feature manual shifters—typically paddles that lie behind the steering wheel—that give the driver more control over changing gears. Drivers don’t need to operate a clutch, so the ride is easier, smoother, and features fewer time lags than a manual system. However, it is very expensive to repair. 4. Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

Unlike the other models, the CVT does not use gears. Rather, it features belts looping around pulleys that can change diameter. This allows for an unlimited number of "gear" ratios and requires no pause at all to change from one setting to the next. Thus, it provides the smoothest ride and best fuel economy possible, and keeps the vehicle operating optimally at all times. However, it does not allow for engine braking.
