Most people realize that cars come with different types of transmissions. Automatic is, by far, the most used, while drivers knowing how to drive stick number only 18% of the U.S. population and falling. However, far fewer know there are not two, but four, different types of vehicle transmissions. Below is a description of the pros and cons of each.

A Guide to Vehicle Transmissions

1. Manual

Manual transmissions require the driver to select the gear to use manually via a "stick shift" selector. The driver must depress a clutch that disengages the engine from the wheels, move the gear shift into place, and release the clutch to re-engage the motor. They are usually less expensive to install, maintain, and repair, but they are more difficult to operate than other types. For many years, they were the most commonly available, so they are sometimes called "standard transmissions."

2. Fully Automatic

transmissionAutomatic transmissions require drivers only to choose the direction of the vehicle and the car's computer, torque converter, and planetary gearset handle the rest. The vehicle automatically and nearly seamlessly shifts gears to accommodate the car's speed. They are very easy to use and produce a smooth, comfortable ride but cost more than manual transmissions to install, repair, and maintain.

3. Semi-Automatic

Also called automated manual or clutchless manual transmissions, these feature manual shifters—typically paddles that lie behind the steering wheel—that give the driver more control over changing gears. Drivers don’t need to operate a clutch, so the ride is easier, smoother, and features fewer time lags than a manual system. However, it is very expensive to repair. Replacement is often the best solution.

4. Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

Unlike the other models, the CVT does not use gears. Rather, it features belts looping around pulleys that can change diameter. This allows for an unlimited number of "gear" ratios and requires no pause at all to change from one setting to the next. Thus, it provides the smoothest ride and best fuel economy possible, and keeps the vehicle operating optimally at all times. However, it does not allow for engine braking.
