Many people enjoy watching squirrels in the park or other public spaces. But these rodents are less enjoyable for gardeners and landscapers when they’re damaging plants and property. In honor of National Squirrel Appreciation Day on January 21st, the guide below lists garden maintenance tips for enjoying wildlife without sacrificing your yard.

What Damage Do Squirrels Do?

Like all wild animals, squirrels get their food from nature. Unfortunately, they don’t discriminate between trees and plants in the woods or public spaces and those in your yard. They eat the bark of certain trees and can weaken the branches. They also eat fruit and nuts from plants that bear them and dig up flower bulbs and seeds. In preparation for winter, they hide food, often in holes in the ground. When winter comes, they’ll recover their winter food supplies by digging it back up again. With some garden maintenance and time, your lawn should improve on its own from squirrel damage. However, in the meantime, it can be quite unsightly. Sometimes, the rodents may also chew wood furniture if food is scarce.

What Can You Do About Them?

garden maintenanceWhether you live in the city or the country, it’s possible to live in harmony with nature, including squirrels, without sacrificing your landscaping by completing a few garden maintenance tasks. Protect fruit and nut-bearing plants with chicken wire or other protective shields to keep squirrels from picking at it. Capsacin-based squirrel repellents are another option to discourage the creatures from flower beds and away from gardens and lawns. These products are less harmful than chemical repellents, which can inadvertently hurt other animals. Alternatively, use a baffle. These act as a barrier that squirrels cannot climb over, while birds have no trouble getting inside.
