Dentist appointments can be intimidating, especially if you have a history of poor oral health or you are unfamiliar with the procedure you need. Fortunately, by using a few coping techniques, you will be able to relax and enjoy your appointment. Here are a few ways to deal with dental anxiety.

Your Guide to Relieving Dental Anxiety

1. Talk With Your Dentist

First-time dental procedures can be scary, so talk with your dentist at the beginning of your appointment about what to expect. Ask what will happen during the visit, and explain your anxieties. Establish hand signals to stop the appointment if needed. If you have severe anxiety or find it difficult to hold still during procedures, mention this to your dentist beforehand so they can prescribe any medication you may need.

2. Clear Your Schedule

dentistSince some dental procedures can require partial anesthesia, some patients worry about how they will look or talk after the appointment.

To soothe anxiety, clear your schedule after the appointment. This will also give you a day for self-care to relax and unwind.

3. Bring a Distraction

To get your mind off a procedure, bring along a distraction, such as a friend to talk to or earphones. This will give you someone to comfort you, or you can distract yourself with your favorite podcast. Distraction has been shown in studies to be effective at reducing the amount of discomfort and physical pain people feel, helping people to soothe anxiety naturally.
