Tooth loss can occur for many reasons, from a traumatic injury to untreated dental decay. If you do lose a tooth, it’s important to have it replaced—failing to do so can cause further oral health issues, like shifting teeth. Dental implants offer a sturdy and long lasting solution. Find out what your options are.

What Types of Dental Implants Are Available?

Endosteal is the most common type of implant. With this technique, your dentist drills a tiny hole into the jawbone and inserts a titanium screw. This screw acts as a replacement root for a fake tooth; a temporary cap is placed on top until the gums heal and a permanent crown can be affixed.

A sturdy jaw with good bone density is required to support endosteal implants. If this is lacking, a bone graft may be recommended. Alternatively, your dentist may suggest subperiosteal implants. With this approach, a metal frame is placed under the gums but over the bone. Tiny metal posts are affixed to the frame and, once the tissue heals, crowns are installed.

Another option, called an immediate load implant, allows for same-day placement of a temporary tooth. However, this is only suitable for those with enough natural bone to support immediate pressure. When chewing food, for example, force is exerted on the fake tooth and the underlying bone.

The All-on-4® technique is another possibility, placing a full arch of four dental implants. This can be used to replace a top or bottom set of adjacent teeth. Using special abutments, it’s possible to install temporary replacement teeth on the same day. After about six months, permanent crowns will be placed.

Which Dental Implant Is for You?

dental implantsTo determine the best dental implant for you, your dentist will take three-dimensional digital images of your mouth. This allows them to analyze the anatomy of your jaw, determining not only whether a sufficiently sturdy base is present but also how to best place the implants. With this information, you and your dentist can decide on the correct option for you.
