Pulling into the driveway to find your residential garage door won’t open is that last thing you want to deal with after a long day. There can be a number of causes, some of which you can fix yourself, and others that require the pros. Whether it won’t open by remote or won’t open manually, consider the following causes and reach out to a repair company for assistance.

Why Isn’t My Garage Door Opening?

1. Connectivity Issues

If your garage door isn’t opening and/or closing via the remote, check the batteries to make sure they haven’t died and that the remote isn’t damaged. Once inside, also make sure the power cord wasn’t accidentally unplugged. If it is plugged in there may be a problem with the outlet or the GFI for that outlet needs to be reset. Look at the photo eyes as well to ensure they’re aligned; if not, the garage door won’t close for safety reasons. Lastly, check that you’re in range of the receiver. If the residential garage door opens manually without any problems, it’s simply a connectivity issue.

2. Blockages

If your residential garage door opens or closes partway then reverses look at the tracks to make sure nothing is stuck in them. Obstructions in front of the safety sensors may also be the cause if the door tries to go down then goes back up. To prevent blockages you’ll need to clean your safety sensors, make sure nothing is hanging from the bottom of the door, and make sure nothing is in the way of the safety sensors.

3. Damaged Parts

The door may have come off the track, a spring or cable on the garage door may have broken, or the motor on the garage door opener may have a damaged part. These issues are much more difficult to diagnose without professional experience, which is why you should contact a garage repair professional for assistance.
