Parasites are a problem that pet owners must continually address. The severity can vary, and understanding them is a key part of pet wellness. Our pet care team at Countryside Veterinary Clinic believes that education is crucial for pet owners and want to share a complete breakdown of parasites that target dogs. By knowing what to look for and how to prevent them, you can be confident your pup is healthy and living a fulfilling life.

Types of Parasites Dogs May Deal With

1. External

External parasites include fleas, ticks, lice, and mites. These troublesome creatures irritate your dog’s skin and feed on their blood, creating constant discomfort and transmitting disease. Ticks, for example, may pass Lyme disease, Ehrlichia Canis, and Anaplasmosis, whereas, lice and mites can cause hair loss, itching and infection. To prevent external parasites, limit time in forests and overgrown areas, use prescribed  medications that kill or repel, and always check your dog for ticks when they come in from the out of doors.

2. Internal

pet-wellness-countryside-veterinary-clinicHeartworm infection is one of the most severe parasitic issues dogs face; it will be fatal if left untreated. Heartworms settle in the heart, lungs, and connected blood vessels where they breed and damage your dog’s heart and circulatory system. This has a significant impact on quality of life; prevention is an essential part of pet wellness. Speak with your veterinarian about ways to prevent heartworm disease. Make sure your pet has a yearly wellness exam so these issues can be treated early.

3. Intestinal

Hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, and tapeworms, as well as one celled protozoa like Giardia can all find their way to your pet’s digestive system. There, they’ll feed on blood, affect the immune system, and cause health complications. Puppies are much more susceptible to intestinal parasites, so stick to your veterinarian’s advised pet wellness regimen. Most can be easily treated; when they go untreated, however, your pet may experience malnutrition, weight loss, and even death.
