This January, veterinarians and pet advocates across the country will celebrate National Walk Your Dog Month, an awareness event dedicated to highlighting the benefits of regular exercise for pups. Whether you’re a new dog parent or want to help your pooch get in better shape for the New Year, walking is one of the best ways to keep your four-legged friend healthy and happy. To get the most benefit out of this activity, here are a few dog-walking tips to keep in mind.

5 Ways to Walk Your Dog Better

1. Choose the Right Leash

Use a leash made of durable material, such as nylon, that can be easily attached to a secure collar. Smaller dogs may benefit from using a harness that provides full body support. Since retractable leashes can give dogs too much distance, look for those that are six to eight feet long.  If you’re unsure of which product to use, ask your veterinarian for a leash recommendation.

2. Train Your Pup

The sooner you can train your dog to walk properly with a leash, the better, especially when it comes to preventing pulling. Ideally, the leash should be relaxed enough so there is no tension between you and your dog, yet it doesn’t drag on the ground. If your pet pulls, don’t give in. Make sure they know that the force won’t do them any favors.

3. Quench Your Dog’s Thirst

veterinarianJust like humans, canines will lose fluids as they exercise, especially in hot weather. To prevent dehydration, bring extra water along to give to your pet. If your dog seems fatigued or is panting, they are thirsty and need to drink water.

4. Get Adventurous

While walks may be routine, the route you take doesn’t have to be. Explore some of Hawaii’s natural hiking trails to give you and your companion an exhilarating and fitness-friendly trek. Your dog will be stimulated by the new sights and smells along the way.

5. Have Backup

If you get busy, you might be tempted to cut your dog’s walk short. However, shortening or skipping this routine can leave your pet feeling anxious and stressed. In these situations, have someone you trust take your pup outside, such as a friend, family member, or professional dog walker.
