Known in the medical world as xerostomia, dry mouth refers to a lack of saliva production. The most common reason for dry mouth is insufficient water intake; however, other factors, such as medication side effects, can cause this issue. Dry mouth prevents saliva from washing away food particles that work with mouth bacteria to form acids and plaque, resulting in teeth and gums vulnerable to decay and disease. If you find yourself constantly waking up with a dry mouth, use these tips to support your dental care.

How to Avoid Dry Mouth During the Night

1. Drink Plenty of Water Throughout the Day

Start sipping water throughout the day if you don’t already—aim for at least one gallon per day to stay hydrated, avoid dry mouth, and enjoy overall better health. It’s wise to always drink water after eating to flush food particles from your mouth and after consuming something sugary, such as soda. Water helps prevent the sticky liquid from coating your teeth and contributing to decay.

2. Avoid Dehydrating Drinks & Habits

3. Chew Sugar-Free Gum

Promote saliva production with sugar-free gum to keep your mouth healthy. Look for those without xylitol if you have an adverse reaction to high amounts of the sugar substitute, such as diarrhea or cramps.

4. Consume Hydrating Foods

Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet since they contain up to 90% water. Enjoy watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, carrots, celery, oranges, raspberries, and tomatoes—not only will your entire body thank you, you’ll go a long way toward avoiding dry mouth during the night.

5. Maintain Good Dental Care Practices

Brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day, floss once daily, and see your dentist every six months to avoid excessive bacteria and plaque buildup in your mouth that worsens when it’s dry. These dental care habits are essential in preventing tooth decay and gum disease.
