If you’re considering using gravel in your landscaping or paving project, you’ll need to arrange gravel hauling to get the supplies you need. If you haven’t placed a gravel order before, some of the terms involved and the process used may be confusing. Here’s a basic breakdown of the most important points.

Gravel Hauling FAQ

How is gravel measured?

Gravel can be ordered either by the yard or by the ton. A yard is short for a cubic yard, or 27 cubic feet of material. A ton is 2,000 pounds. One cubic yard of gravel usually weights over one and a half tons.

How much should I order?

Gravel HaulingTo determine how much gravel you need, measure the area you want to fill and decide how deep the layer of gravel should be. Many projects require two or three inches of gravel. A yard of material covers a 10-foot by 10-foot area to a depth of about three inches.

What if I only need a little?

Most gravel hauling companies have a minimum order size to make the delivery cost effective. If you need less than the minimum size, you may be able to split a shipment with someone else who needs gravel. The company you’re buying from may also offer an exception if you are willing to pay a higher rate or transport the material yourself.

How is the delivery handled?

Your gravel will be delivered by a truck, usually a dump truck, which will pile the gravel wherever you direct. Make sure to have an area clear for the pile, and have clear, easy access to the area to make delivery fast, safe, and simple.
