Whether you’re moving across the country or putting some of your belongings into self-storage, it’s important to start early and give yourself time to pack carefully. Even if an item seems relatively solid, unless it’s packed properly, you might find nothing but broken pieces when you pull it out again. Below are a few tips for making sure your belongings make it through the journey in one piece.

3 Tips for Packing Fragile Items

1. Treat Plates Like Records

Stacking plates in a smaller box might seem like the best choice, but the weight can crack the dishes on the bottom even if you’re just putting them into self-storage. Instead, wrap each plate individually in packing paper or bubble wrap and stack them vertically, like records. Use more paper to protect the plates from each other and fill any excess space in the box.

2. Wrap Glasses Individually

Otherwise, the protective layer will probably come unraveled if the box gets jostled around. Stuff each piece with packing paper and wrap especially fragile items in clothing or dish towels. Wine glasses are especially vulnerable to damage, so you might want to put them in the middle of a box of clothes.

3. Wrap Large, Fragile Items in Cardboard

Antique display pieces can be especially hard to pack, as they’re often bulky, with handles and other parts that can easily break off. Instead of putting these items in boxes, wrap them completely in bubble wrap, then place them on top of a piece of cardboard. Put another piece of cardboard on top, then bend the edges together so the object is completely secured. Wrap it in tape, put it into another box, and fill any empty space with packing paper.
