A Guide for Protecting Your Dog’s Paws This Winter , Elyria, Ohio

Winter can be an uncomfortable time of year for your dog. The freezing temperatures combined with recently-spread de-icing agents can irritate their paws and cause a number of issues to develop. Luckily, several precautions can be taken to protect your furry friend and avoid a trip to the local animal hospital.

4 Tips for Protecting Your Dog’s Paws During Winter

1. Shorten Your Walks

Being in direct contact with frozen surfaces for too long will put your pet at risk of frostbite, which could result in a visit to the animal hospital. Shorten your walks and increase the number of times that they’re taken outdoors. This will ensure that they get enough exercise without endangering the condition of their paws.

2. Use Booties

animal hospitalBooties are one of the most effective methods for protecting a dog’s paws from the cold. The thick layer of waterproof material provides a solid barrier against any form of de-icing agent that may be used within the area.

3. Use Plenty of Paw Balm

Freezing temperatures can cause the padding under the paws to become dry and cracked. This can become increasingly uncomfortable when brought into contact with a surface that’s been treated for ice. Before stepping foot out the door, take a moment to rub some paw balm on your dog’s pads. The soothing ingredients will keep the skin smooth and create a protective layer over the bottom of their paws.

4. Have a Towel Handy

It’s common for pets to lick their paws after being outdoors. However, with deicers spread around, there’s a chance of them ingesting the chemicals and being rushed to the animal hospital. Keep a towel by the door and wipe off their paws as soon as you come in to remove any residue. Use a bowl of warm water to rinse off their feet before drying them if there seems to be a substantial amount of salt.
