Whether you were in a car accident or had the misfortune of your car being struck by a flying rock, any damage done to your windshield should be addressed right away. Even the slightest chip or crack can obstruct your view and turn into a safety issue while you’re driving. If the damage is significant enough to warrant needing a replacement windshield, you may have questions about the process. Here are the answers to a few common questions about this important repair service.

Common Questions and Answers Concerning Replacement Windshields

How do I know if I need windshield repair or replacement?

In some cases, windshield chips and cracks can be repaired, but this generally depends on the size, depth, and location of the damage. It’s also easier to do repairs when the blemish has just occurred, as the glass gets more difficult to seal over time if the crack spreads. After a careful inspection, your windshield installer will be able to determine whether or not you need a replacement.

How is a new windshield installed?

replacement windshieldOnce the old windshield glass is removed, your vehicle is prepped to make sure the new windshield will securely bond with your vehicle’s frame. The surface of the new windshield will also be primed for an airtight fit. Adhesive is applied to the car frame and windshield before carefully gliding the glass into place. This can typically be completed in about an hour.

What can I expect after my windshield is replaced?

After the replacement windshield is installed, your vehicle will need to sit for at least an hour before it can be driven. This will give the adhesive time to dry. You should also refrain from pressure washing your car for 24 hours, leave the windows down a half inch to release some of the air pressure, and be extra cautious not to slam the doors.

Are replacement windshields covered by insurance?

If your insurance policy includes comprehensive coverage, your windshield replacement will likely be covered. In that case, the only thing you may be responsible for paying out of pocket is the deductible. You will need to start the claim process with your provider, and then your glass installer can handle the rest.
