Industrial businesses and contractors across the world rely on cylinders of compressed gas to fuel welding and cutting projects. Unfortunately, working with compressed gas is inherently dangerous. However, by knowing how to stay safe, you’ll limit the likelihood of injury and liability claims. Here are three tips for safely working with compressed gas.

How to Use Compressed Gas Safely

1. Keep Your Work Space Well Ventilated

While using compressed gas, keep the area well-ventilated to prevent issues like explosions and injuries from leaking gas. In addition to making workplaces safer, maintaining proper air flow also reduces odors and dust accumulation.

2. Move & Store Tanks Carefully

Since cylinders can be punctured or experience valve problems if dropped, only allow trained workers to move cylinders, and remind them to be incredibly careful as they transport gas. After the tanks have been moved, make sure they are attached to either a heavy dolly or permanent structure to keep them from toppling.

3. Use Cylinder Safety Devices

As an added layer of protection, consider using cylinder safety devices such as pressure relief valves, fusible plugs, and rupture discs. These devices are designed to prevent explosions by instantly accounting for pressure changes and potentially plugging cracks or fractures.
