Allow us to introduce Brian Austin.  Brian has been a member of Bombers CrossFit for a little over two years.  In that time he as been a fixture of the early morning crew, but he’s been known to show up around the evenings from time to time.  Brian, balances his Air Force duties, raises a family, and is a husband to an amazing wife.  He continues to have a positive attitude and is a pleasure to have in class.  If you haven’t had the chance to meet Brian yet, go introduce your self and ask him what goals he’s been quietly crushing lately...

How did you hear about CrossFit and what was your first experience?

I was sitting in my office surrounded by three Bomber’s members who kept talking about Wodify and what scores they got. I had done some light strength training and, after three months of urging from all three of them I decided to try it out. My first workout was a 5 AM session doing the B-52 workout which is moving a total of 5200 lbs from ground to overhead. At the end of it I could barely move but the support from everyone in the class was amazing. I also couldn’t move the next day…but came back two more days in a row.

When did you first come to Bombers CrossFit?

I started in September 2016.

How many days do you CrossFit?

4-5 days a week or often schedule and body allows.

What classes do you normally take?

I’ve been a dedicated 5 AM meber for two years but recently swapped to the afternoon crew of 530. I’ve had a chance to attend all of the classes at one time or another.

What motivates you/keeps you coming back to Bombers CrossFit?

Hands down, the community. It started with the moral support and encouragement while pushing through a tough workout but now our family friends consist of everyone in the gym. Additionally, Bomber’s coaches are some of the best. I’ve had a chance to drop in to 12 different gyms over the last couple years and it’s always refreshing to get back to Bombers and their outstanding coaching.

What’s your favorite thing about the Dayton area?

Location! Dayton is just big enough to have plenty of things to do in the area but is also small enough to not be a major city. We are less than an hour from Cincinnati and Columbus which provide plenty of opportunities if you want a bigger city experience but I prefer a smaller city for every day living.

What accomplishment are you the proudest of (inside and outside of the gym)?

Outside of the gym, convincing my best friend to my family. Marrying my best friend and having two kids that challenge me in new ways every day. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for them. As for the gym, double unders! I’ve been working towards them the last couple years and they just clicked recently.

After a hard workout, what is your favorite meal?

Chicken tenders. Any kind of chicken tenders really but Raising Cane’s chicken is at the top of my list right now.

What are some of your interests outside of CrossFit?

I don’t talk about it much at the gym but I’m an avid gamer. However, between work, gym time, family, school, and hanging out with friends I don’t spend as much time playing them anymore.

What is one goal within the gym that you’re working on?

Working on using proper form across all movements in the gym. I have been fortunate enough to hit some of my major goals over the last year and don’t have a single specific goal I am driving towards right now. Whether it’s faster elbows while performing a clean or better form in an air squat, there is always something to improve.

What impact has CrossFit had on your life/lifestyle/level of fitness?

It has changed my whole perspective on fitness. Being fit is not simply just passing an Air Force PT test, staying under 180 lbs, and looking good in the mirror. It’s about eating properly, performing movements properly, and long-term health.

What advice would you give to a newbie?

Hard work pays off but take it slow. Focus on technique and check your ego at the door. Your RX days will come but you need to make sure you take care of your body on the way there.
