If you’ve recently had epoxy flooring installed, you’re probably wondering how you can protect your investment for the long run. While this material is easy to care for, neglecting some important steps could damage it and reduce its lifespan. Below is a list of critical do’s and don’ts for epoxy flooring. Follow them and you’ll be sure to keep your new floor in peak condition.

Do:

Invest in a quality dust mop.

Dust and grit are the two factors that will dull your floor most quickly if they aren’t dealt with. That’s because they’re abrasive and can gradually wear the finish off the floor. A quality dust mop will make cleaning easy and trap as much debris as possible, protecting your floor for the long-term.

Wash at least once a week.

In addition to daily sweeping, wash the floor once a week with an epoxy-safe cleaner. While you should let a mix of cleaner and water sit briefly to loosen debris, don’t let it dry on the surface. This can leave slippery residue that may harm the epoxy.

Don’t:

Use waxes or sealants.

Epoxy floors are designed to be resilient and self-protecting, so you don’t need to apply any extra coatings. In fact, doing so could make the surface slippery and put you at risk of lawsuits from customers, employees, or guests. Regular cleaning will be enough to keep the floor looking its best.

Use cleaners without testing them.

Even substances that are advertised as safe for epoxy floors can have unpredictable interactions with the material. Before you wash your entire floor with a new cleaner, test it in a small inconspicuous area, such as a corner that’s normally hidden by furniture. If you don’t notice any discoloration or odd results, you can feel confident using the cleaner for the whole floor.
