In 1777, the first American flag was formally established by the Continental Congress—a sign of promise for a recently founded nation. Today, the custom flag has evolved well beyond its 13 red-and-white stripes and stars, but it remains a respected symbol of patriotism. If you want to hang a flag on your property, follow these guidelines to show the stars-and-stripes the respect they deserve.

How Should a U.S. Flag Be Displayed?

custom flagsMany people like to hang a flag from an angled staff secured to the side of their home or porch railing. In this case, the union—the blue part—should be placed at the peak of the staff.

If you are not using a staff, the flag may be hung against a wall, horizontally or vertically, so that the union is uppermost to the flag’s right side. If you hang it in a window, it should be positioned so the union is to the upper left from the street-side point of view.

If you want to combine the stars-and-stripes with another custom flag—like one featuring your state emblem—they must be placed at a higher point. If the flags share a staff, the stars-and-stripes need to be at the top. In a group of flags, the U.S. banner must be in the center and above the others.

What General Etiquette Needs to be Observed?

Once you have your flag installed, there are general etiquette rules to observe. On certain events like Pear Harbor Day, for example, the flag should be flown at half-mast. You can sign up for email notifications letting you know when this is needed.

In general, it’s important to keep the flag from getting dirty and worn. Outside flags will eventually fade with sun and exposure to the elements. When this happens, get a replacement. A clean and well-kept custom flag is a sign of respect and assures the status of this important symbol.
