5 Items You Should Keep in Your Car During Winter, Florissant, Missouri

Winter driving is often unavoidable, but it has distinct risks from the rest of the year. You can’t always predict when a blizzard will materialize, forcing you to pull over and wait it out. Breaking down in the middle of winter is risky—but if you pack these five items in your car, you’ll be better equipped to wait until you can get your car to an auto repair shop.

Winter Emergency Supplies to Help You Reach Auto Repair Services

1. Blankets

In an ideal world, winter breakdowns would only be brief affairs and would occur in places where there’s a good chance of someone finding you. This isn’t always the case, however. Cars sometimes break down during the middle of snowstorms in isolated locations. If this happens, a warm blanket will help keep your body temperature up while you wait.

2. Candles

Though a candle may not seem to provide much heat in ordinary conditions, it makes a huge difference when there’s no other source. It can help you outlast a snowstorm on the road as you wait for auto repair assistance to arrive. Remember that it’s usually best to stay in your car rather than attempting to go for help, as cars provide protection against wind and cold.

3. An Ice Scraper

4. Sand or Cat Litter

If your wheels keep spinning, you’ll need something to provide traction. A large bag of sand or cat litter will be perfect for this. Pour it on the ground in front of your car. If you don’t have any, try laying down the car mats. Also, make sure you have a collapsible shovel in case you have to dig your car out.

5. Reflectors

If you get stuck along a busy route, the good news is that emergency vehicles will likely be along soon. The bad news is that other cars may be driving along that route, and, thanks to the bad conditions, they may not see you parked on the side of the road. This creates risks for a collision, which is why it’s important to place reflectors outside your car. It’s actually a good idea to have these in your car year-round since you never know when you might get stuck somewhere at night.
