Every two years, Missouri motorists are required to have their cars professionally inspected to ensure that the vehicle is safe and compliant with emission regulations. Thanks to on-board diagnostic equipment, auto inspections can be completed in minutes. If problems are present, owners must repair and pass another inspection to maintain the registration. If you want to make sure your car is ready to pass, here’s what you can expect from the process.

6 Sections That Are Checked During Missouri Auto Inspections

1. Interior

This check focuses on how the internal controls and systems function. For example, the inspector will make sure that brake warning lights, steering wheel adjustment, pedals, windshield wipers, seat belts, and mirrors are intact and working properly.

2. Exterior

auto inspectionOn the exterior, your specialist will verify that essential features, like the gas cap, all lights, and windshield wiper blades, are working properly. They’ll also inspect the height of the front and rear bumpers. Depending on the type of vehicle, bumpers must fall within a height range as determined by the state.

3. Under the Hood

This assessment is designed to ensure all the car’s essential mechanical systems are attached properly and in a safe and functional condition. Specifically, the inspector will look at the master cylinder unit, control arms, and power steering unit. All major steering elements, including the tie rods, strut mounting, and steering box, will also be checked.

The physical review of the engine and its related components is one of the most extensive portions of the inspection. Items that must pass inspection include the fuel system, wheel bearings, brake lines and hoses, exhaust system, shock absorbers, ball joints, idler arm, pitman arm, and stabilizer links. The engine will be tested to make sure it can start and stop without complication.

4. Emissions

The emissions inspection ensures that your vehicle is equipped to restrict air pollution in accordance with state laws. These components include the oxygen sensor, catalytic converter, spark control, exhaust gas recirculation, air injection, as well as the T.A.C. and P.C.V. systems.

5. Brake Performance

The wheels are removed to check that all brake mechanisms are in working condition. Next, the brake performance is reviewed to ensure that the vehicle can safely stop.
