Collision shops encounter a wide variety of different auto body repairs. Some are minor or merely cosmetic, while others affect the vehicle’s drivability. Fortunately, in the majority of cases, the bodywork is not particularly serious. Here are some of the most common types of collision repair and how they are performed.

What Are the Most Common Types of Auto Body Repair?

1. Paintless Dent Removal

Most dents can be removed without the vehicle needing traditional body care like paint or filler. The technician can often simply remove the exterior—or sometimes an interior—panel to provide access to the backside of the dent. They can then massage the body material back into shape and replace the panel. This works best for wide, shallow dents. For deep, narrow dents, traditional methods may be necessary.

2. Windshield Replacement

The glass is also sandwiched between two layers of laminate to hold it together in the event of a collision. Minor chip or cracks in the glass can be repaired—or at least prevented from spreading—with touch-ups from an auto glass super glue. However, if not addressed quickly, minor cracks can worsen. More serious cracks require the windshield be replaced entirely.

3. Auto Painting

Whether paint damage is caused by scraping against some type of obstacle, dings from highway debris, or minor parking lot collisions involving grocery carts or car doors, auto painting is an extremely common type of auto body repair. Technicians now use computers to analyze and match the paint color and blend it with the existing paint job, so the touch-up appears seamless.
