Your HVAC system is critical to your comfort throughout the winter season. However, the unit may have difficulting maintaining the set temperature if there are gaps in its insulation. Air leaks are common around the windows, which is why you should take steps to bolster them before the winter season begins.

How to Insulate Your Windows in Winter

1. Use an Insulation Film

Apply a specialized plastic film to the interior side of the windows. Then, heat it with a hairdryer to shrink and tighten the material. This protective layer will dry clear, almost invisible. However, what you will notice is a decrease in your utility bills, as the film works to prevent heat transfer, keeping the house warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer without causing the HVAC to overstrain itself.

windows2. Seal Cracks With Caulk

Even small cracks around your windowpane can allow cool air to seep into the house. Use a silicon-based caulk for metal and glass, while polyurethane caulk is best for wood surfaces.

3. Add Weatherstripping

Weatherstripping can also be used to seal off any gaps around the windows and prevent drafts. While the stationary parts, such as the panes, can be filled with foam rubber or felt weatherstripping material, make sure to not hinder the movement of the others, like the frame and sash, unless you plan on keeping the windows closed until the end of the season.
