If you recently graduated from truck driving school, first take a moment to congratulate yourself on completing your education. Whether you have already received offers from employers or are just starting the application process, there’s a few questions you’ll want to ask before you say “yes” to a job. Use these queries to determine if the potential employer is right for your career aspirations and needs.

5 Questions to Ask an Employer After Graduating From Truck Driving School

1. What Is Your Home Time Policy?

Truck drivers spend countless hours on the road. Whether you have a family at home or not, it’s important to learn about the company’s work/life balance policy. Ask how much time you will be expected to work throughout the year. Consider the answer in light of what you will be paid to figure out if it’s worth it to you, at least for the time being.

2. Do You Offer Benefits?

Health insurance benefits vary by company--some may offer outstanding coverage, while others provide poor benefits or none at all. The lack of benefits indicates disinterest in employee health and wellness and may be demonstrative of how you will be treated as a truck driver.

3. What Are Your Major Routes?

Most drivers want routes relatively close to home or those where traffic isn’t backed up most of the time. You’ll also want to learn if there are any terminals near your home you can use for refueling and maintenance services.

4. Will I Receive Layover Pay?

Layover pay refers to compensation for long wait times that are beyond your control. If the inventory you haul regularly is late due to bad weather or a delivery error, for example, you are still “on the clock” and should receive pay for having to wait.

5. Do You Slip-Seat?

Some trucking companies implement “slip-seat” policies, or when a driver wants time off and is temporarily replaced by another employee. You may have no issue with this policy if you do not mind sharing your truck; however, if yours is a sleeper vehicle or you have other reasons for wanting to keep the semi to yourself, find another company to work for.
