Whether the engine in your current car is failing or you’re rebuilding a classic, purchasing and installing new engines on your own is a fun, affordable, and effective way to get the vehicle on the road. When buying used vehicle parts – especially an engine – you need to make sure they function well, are in good shape, and are what you need. Below is more information on how to go about making sure the used engine you buy isn’t a bust.

The Necessary Parts

One of the first things you should do is inspect the engine for the necessary parts that it will need to run. For instance, spark plug gasoline engines work by igniting a mixture of fuel and air to move a piston attached to the crankshaft. Thus, they have eight main vehicle parts: spark plugs, intake and outtake valves, a piston, piston rings, a crankshaft, a connecting rod, and an oil sump. Prior to inspecting the engine, brush up on that specific engine’s anatomy so you’re able to easily identify the presence and condition of the needed parts.

Checking the Quality

enginesEven if all the parts are there, you should run a series of visual inspections and tests on the engine to ensure it’s working properly. Check the oil to ensure it’s not so grungy as to imply neglect but not so clean as to imply fresh oil was put in it to hide something. If you’re able, take the spark plugs off and check for signs of oil buildup, which would indicate an issue.

Visually inspect all parts for signs of corrosion or excessive wear. After you’ve inspected it, connect it to a fuel line and a battery and start it. Listen for unusual sounds, such as squealing or uneven idling, and note the color of the exhaust, which should only be white. Grey or blue smoke means there’s a problem. To determine the wear of the engine and if there are leaks, perform a compression test on it.

Knowing the Facts

Don’t be afraid to ask the seller any questions you need to ascertain the condition of the engine. See if they can provide a vehicle history report for the car it came out of, and get key information about the engine, such as the number of miles it has on it and specs you’ll need to know to ensure it’s the right fit for your vehicle. Ask what condition the vehicle was in when the engine was removed from it and if they’ve performed any testing or inspection on it themselves.
