An appetizer staple at sports bars and restaurants, buffalo wings have etched a permanent spot in culinary history because of their unique flavor and texture. However, how much do you know about the history of this famous food? Here is information about the history of buffalo wings, and why you can find them at thousands of restaurants around the world today.

The History of Buffalo Wings

When Were Buffalo Wings Founded?

wingsThe origins of this treat stem in Buffalo, NY, in 1964. Teressa Bellissimo, the partial owner, and chef at the Anchor Bar, had received an accidental shipment of buffalo wings instead of other, more popular chicken parts, and developed the dish out of necessity. After deep frying them without any type of batter, she concocted a sauce out of butter, cayenne pepper, and slathered them in the now-famous sauce. Although the story was disputed by Bellissimo’s son, the family is credited with the invention of the modern-day Buffalo wing.

How Did Popularity Spread?

Although this finger food was a local favorite for decades, it rose to popularity in 1993 when a radio station host created the first wing bowl eating contest. Drawing crowds of more than 20,000 people, the event was televised and the concept of spicy, fried wings spread across the United States. The appetizer is now served at pizzerias, entertainment and game venues, and family gatherings.
